Paula M Miotto
Dr. Miotto has been working in Prof Matthew Watt’s lab since September 2018, shortly after completing her PhD studying the regulation of mitochondrial bioenergetics at the University of Guelph, Canada. Notably, Dr. Miotto was top-ranked within her relative field in two independent national level post-doctoral fellowship competitions. This includes funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC, ranked 1st) and subsequently the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR, ranked 3rd). Dr. Miotto has also secured ~1 million in research funding through the ‘Diabetes Australia Research Program’ (CIA), an ‘MDHS Early Career Researcher grant’ (CIA), a ‘DAP ECR seed grant’ (CIA), and an NHMRC Idea’s grant (CIB). Dr. Miotto’s current work mainly focusses on the role of small extracellular vesicles in regulating inter-tissue communication and metabolic adaptations in response to exercise and diseased states. A few of the specialized techniques she uses involve mitochondrial kinetics using high-resolution respirometry (Oroboros; isolated mitochondria and permeabilized muscle fibers, brain, liver, and adipose) and reactive oxygen species emission (fluorometry), various metabolic assays in vivo, ex vivo, and in cell culture, and proteomics/phospho-proteomic analyses.
